: I happened to run into our old XO from the mid-80's CMDR Dan Garner.. In case anyone was wondering he seems to be doing super just as expected. He got out of the service just after he left the Brewton (like most of us really smart ones did) just kidding, and has been with the DOD since. It was kind of nice chatting with him.
: Just thought some of you would like an update. I have to say that out of all the officers that I ever served under he was by far the best. Too bad there were not more like him as lots of us probably would have made a career out of the service if there were. The one nice part about the Brewton is that most of the officers and crew were pretty awesome back then.
: CDR Gardner was a squared-away dude and very fair. I was mess-cranking in the wardroom one evening in port and a food fight broke out among the more junior officers on duty. I was laughing about it until one of them asked who was going to clean up the mess and the CDO said: "That's what mess-cranks are for." I, still laughing, said that wasn't going to happen and right about then in walks the XO! He was shocked at the mess, and you should have seen the look on the J.O.s' faces. Sheer terror!! The X.O. looked at me and said: "You're dismissed SN Bustin". I hightailed it back into the pantry to put my stuff away and when I peaked back through the door it was all kacky assholes and elbos as they kneeled on the floor picking up taco fixings. HA!!! Not that they were bad guys, just young and goofy like the rest of us but had to TRY and hide it more.
